Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory infection that affects the nose, throat and lungs. Unlike a cold, the flu comes on very fast usually with headache, fever , sore throat and muscle aches. Most people recover from the flu within 10 days or so. While others experience complications such as chest pain, dizziness, vomiting, bloody or colored mucus and a high fever lasting more than 10 days.

People with chronic health conditions and a weakened immune system are more susceptible to flu complications. Especially the elderly. This is why it may be very important to take the annual flu shot, if you can. Though there are some natural ways to prevent the flu, if you dont follow a few common sense steps to help protect yourself.

One quick and easy way to help protect yourself from contracting the flu is washing your hands repeatedly throughout the day. If you are in a public place (such as at work), this is very important. Just wash your hands for a few minutes in warm soapy water. Another big tip is to really try to avoid touching your nose, mouth or around your eyes.
