Bleeding gums are one of the classic signs that you have developed early-stage gum disease. This phase of the condition is known as gingivitis. It is a mild condition where gums often bleed, they may be redder than normal and swollen and irritated. You may also experience bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. While this phase of gum disease is mild and easily treated, you need to heed its warning. Otherwise the condition can become advanced and lead to serious infections and even tooth loss.

If you notice bleeding gums, you should visit your dentist for a proper diagnosis of what is causing them and to formulate a treatment plan. However, along with your dentist’s advice, there are a couple of simple things that you can do.

Removing The Source
Bacteria and plaque are the main causes of gum disease and bleeding gums. For this reason, it is essential that you remove these two daily in order to prevent the condition worsening and further damaging the gum tissue. The most effective way to remove bacteria and plaque is by following a stringent home dental health routine. This should include brushing, flossing and using a mouthwash at least twice daily.

Select The Right Products
There are many different oral health products out there, but they may not all be appropriate for you. It is important that you choose products that are going to support your oral health and not hinder it. Generally, dentists recommend that people use soft-bristled toothbrushes and this is particularly the case if you have bleeding gums. Hard bristles can further damage the gum tissue.

Choose your mouthwash carefully too. There are plenty of products out there that contain alcohol, which can be damaging to sensitive gum tissue. It may be a good idea to ask your dentist to recommend one for you. Using a mild mouthwash is important in order to flush away the left over bacteria in the mouth after brushing and using dental floss.

Natural products are often very effective and do not contain harsh chemicals that can harm your gums. Clove oil is known as for its anesthetic and healing properties. When applied to the gums, it helps reduce the pain caused by bleeding gums. Other natural items such as aloe vera and tea tree oil are also very effective at eradicating bacteria and infection and soothing the gums. Look out for natural products as a very good alternative to chemical-laden commercial dental products.
